Where your pawns are placed determines the strength of your defense but also the pattern of your offense.
- Remember, pawns cannot move backwards, so if a pawn is too far ahead and unprotected, your opponent may sneak up behind and ambush you.
- Side pawns, especially those protecting a castled king, should remain in place to guard the king.
- Pawns are at their strongest when side-by-side on the same rank.
- Avoid losing too many pawns because later on in the game they may help by being promoted.
